Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Her father's death as a Carnival barker as a little girl, she had to help keep the family going by working as a cook and server. Ruth lived in a slum Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She was a student in the area. She quit school in just two years in order to study acting. This path was fraught with challenges. When she was offered a job at New York as a model for a detective magazine she was unable to get jobs in the stage. The next position she was offered was a "hat check" lady at a club but she quit and relocated to Boston. It was there that she was able to earn a living as an usherette by during the day and then at night performed with the New England Repertory Company. It was her first acting job. Her studies in drama led her to graduate in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
